Foursquare?

read this article first!

When I read on facebook that my friend David was bringing 'foursquare' to Syracuse University, I looked up what exactly 'foursquare' is.  Basically it is a social networking site that you can use from you cellphone, facebook, Twitter, etc.  You can check into different places on your school campus or around town. In that article at the top of this post, there were interviews with different people on the SU campus.  I would have to agree with the girl who thinks it is a bit ridiculous.  If you "check-in" at one of the buildings and your neighbors know you are not home, they could easily break into you dorm room, house, or apartment.  I think it isn't that necessary.  I was walking around the RCC on Monday and I saw a sign for foursquare and am aware that many people on the BSU campus are using it.  I just think whoever uses it should be careful and not check in at every place they go.  Let yourself be a little mysterious!

  1. I've never heard of Foursquare before and think it is also a bit rediculous. I have a blackberry which has me constantly connected to the internet, facebook, and so on. I don't like always being connected I like to be alone and not worrying whose emailing me or if I got a notification on Facebook. I think that tecnology is becoming to open about our lives, which is scary.

  2. It is an interesting concept if it weren't on a public forum, like the internet. Social networking and now "Foursquare" is in a way bring us back to the stoneage in the sense that back when humans lived in small communities everyone knew everything about everyone and this is what seems to be becoming. I think privacy is on it's way out, but really privacy is a modern invention.

  3. I suppose the concept does top the newest social media tools out there, but when does it end? Will we ever go back to calling people, or having direct face to face conversations with people? Yes I'll admit it, it's much easier to text someone of write on their wall real quick, becuase lets face it, most phonecalls do not take a minute, it turns into a big deal. Privacy however, is something people should not take for granted. This 'foursquare' is just going to influence facebook to compete, and with that people will start posting more about where they are (leaving it obvious they are NOT home). I never let my facebook status get too personal, and leave it pretty basic, but I have some friends who like to tell everyone what they eat for breakfast lunch and dinner, where they ate, who they ate with and when then ate these meals. Sorry, but your food consumption schedule does not interest me, nor will this new site about checking in here and checking out there. It's just gone too far.
